Spitzer y el Perú Por Silvio Rendon

En I've Seen My Share of Spitzers: The View From an Escort Service una persona que estuvo dedicada al negocio de la prostitución de alto precio responde a una pregunta muy simple:

But why would a rich, powerful and handsome man pay for extra-marital sex? Aren’t there tons of women waiting to throw themselves at him for free? Yes, there are. But those women always want something: they want attention, intimacy and romance. They want to enjoy the high of sleeping with a powerful man. Escorts don’t want or care about any of those things. At least one of the articles about the 22 year-old escort who slept with Spitzer implied that she didn’t even know who he was. Based on my experience, I think it’s highly unlikely that she knew or cared. She was in it for the money, and she had as much to hide as he did.

Remember that scene from Casablanca, when Captain Renault declares that he is shocked, shocked to find gambling going on — just as the croupier hands him his winnings? I keep thinking of that scene when I read about all those politicians who are baying for Spitzer’s blood. Because I know, and they know, that almost all of them have been escort agency clients too. Show me a rich and powerful man between the ages of 35 and 60 who has never paid an escort for sex, and I will show you a man who is a very rare exception.

Visto así, se trata de un negocio generalizado y surge la pregunta: entonces, ¿por qué se las agarran sólo con Spitzer y no con otros? Es como preguntarse por qué en el Perú se las agarraban tanto con Toledo y no con otros. Ya he comentado mi opinión al respecto en La hipótesis del racismo. En el caso de Spitzer desde luego que las versiones en tal sentido no se han hecho esperar: Spitzer Case Politically Motivated. Es una especulación a la que habría que prestarle atención.

Otro aspecto interesante es que después del escándalo Spitzer no va a durar mucho en su cargo. No hay muchos políticos que lo vayan a proteger, pues es claro que ha actuado mal. No hay gente que le minimice su mala jugada. Nada de barrer bajo la alfombra. Nada de carpetazos de apoyo. Más aún, ahora los medios recuerdan lo que prometió cuando candidateaba:



Queda muy mal..

Y no estaría mal que en el Perú se recuerde lo que prometieron públicamente los políticos que hoy nos gobiernan.

Tiene que haber una mayor fiscalización. Como diría Harry, el sucio "la gente debe saber sus limitaciones".

Actualización: Y ¿cuál es el delito de Spitzer? En los EEUU, la prostitución y el adulterio son crímenes, lo cual sería suficiente, pero supongamos que no lo fueran. Uno podría decir que la libre transacción económica entre una prostituta y un cliente no debería estar penada y que el adulterio, como parte de la esfera personal y la vida privada, tampoco. Spitzer todavía estaría mal, pues pregonó una cosa y acabó haciendo otra. El artículo del Village Voice Spitzer goes down lo dice claro:

If there was a crime on the books to describe Eliot Spitzer's most serious violation as he cavorted with "Kristen" in Room 871 of the Mayflower Hotel, it would have nothing to do with prostitution, or illegal wire-transfers, or any other law aimed at preventing people from simply having too good a time.

Rather, it would be something like this: Grand Theft: Voter Dignity. Spitzer sold his image as a straight-arrow, anti-corruption crusader so well that he sailed into office in November 2006 with almost 70 percent of the vote, the biggest margin ever for a non-incumbent governor.

He built that reputation by pouncing on the shortcomings of others, vowing to give no quarter in his defense of the public interest. As an attorney general tilting at crimes on Wall Street that he insisted federal regulators were too timid to tackle, he threatened to "put a spike" through the heart of a prominent businessman who defied him. "I will be coming after you. You will pay the price," he screamed at another, an elderly investment banker.
